ARGENTINA | Art Song

“The Argentinian soprano Soledad Cardoso, who has lived in Barcelona for twenty-five years, has recorded her first solo album. And despite being well known in the baroque world, she has decided to delve into a programme dedicated to the songs of her native country. A repertoire from the beginning of the 20th century quite unknown to many music lovers and performers, and one to which she feels very close. We begin the disc with songs by Carlos Guastavino, who reveals himself to us as a great melodist, who also knows how to distil popular Argentinean elements in his compositions. These are delightful songs, brief, with attractive melodic lines —just listen to Anhelo or Noches de Santa Fe—, with a touch of sadness, but also of joy —Mi viña de Chapanay. Cardoso’s luminous voice, agile and with a rich timbre, works very well in this repertoire, without seeking exaggerations, together with a pianist who is always seductive, agile and rich in nuances. But the backbone of the disc is Gilardo Gilardi’s Trece canciones argentinas on poems by Leopoldo Lugones. And it is necessary to thank the soprano for her incursion into this more unknown repertoire. A cycle in which different characteristic features and allusions to Argentinean musical folklore also emerge. And once again Soledad Cardoso’s agile voice, with its broad nuances and good taste, captivates and moves us —the Lied de la estrella marina or the Lied de los ojos amados are a good example of this.

Alongside them, a jovial interpretation of the Danza irregular and a moving Canción de cuna india by Gilardi himself underline the importance of this composer. The disc closes with works by the composer Lía Cimaglia, Arturo Luzzati, as well as Emilio Dublanc’s Tres canciones de soledad. Soledad Cardoso presents herself as a mature soprano, imbued with expressiveness, a refined voice —with a certain vibrato that does not disturb—, beautiful diction and broad nuance, paying homage to her homeland and vindicating lesser-known composers. A well-balanced duo, with a programme as lyrical as it is well crafted, which will open our eyes to Argentina.”
